Coimbatore : Harsh weather conditions have resulted in surge of Tomato prices across the district. The prices have spiked from Rs.15 to Rs.50 per kg.

Tomato is a relatively warm season crop, with day and night temperature requirement in the range of 26-30 degree Celsius and 14-19 degree Celsius respectively. However, the extreme chillness and frost prevailing during the nights have resulted in scorching of tomato leaves, thus affecting the yield.

Speaking on this, vendors from MGR Market at Saibaba Colony here said, "Compared to the previous weeks, the inflow of tomato has drastically declined. Following heavy demand and low yield, the prices have increased".

"Tomato prices will continue to rise, if the cold weather continues", they added.

As the meteorological department has warned that the temperatures will continue to drop in the upcoming days, the prices of tomato and other vegetables are expected to rise further.
