Tirupur : Tirupur farmers who cultivated flame lily flowers for this season got severely affected in the recent Gaja cyclone. Farmers are demanding proper compensation from the State government for their losses.

Several farmers in Mulanur and Vellakovil area in Tirupur have cultivated flame lily flowers in 15,000 acres of land this year. The produce, which was in ready to harvest stage got scorched in the recent rains due to Gaja cyclone. Farmers demanded that the horticulture department should conduct a proper survey and submit a report to the State government.

The seeds of flame lily are used in the preparation of cancer medicine and the market price of per kilo seeds goes up to Rs.3500. Farmers here complained that their yield has been affected due to the rains and the horticulture department isn’t offering necessary assistance to protect their yield.

Farmers said that they have invested up to Rs.8 lakhs cultivate these flowers and they are forced to depend on the price offered by mediators to sell their yield. Farmers demanded that the horticulture department should offer a minimum selling price for the flowers and offer loan schemes through cooperative banks.
