TNAU encourages ‘One student one tree’ planting program

Coimbatore: A mass tree planting program ‘One student one tree program’ to encourage students to plant trees was organized by the Dean (Agriculture) in association with Dean (Horticulture) for the UG first year students in the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore campus on Monday.

Coimbatore: A mass tree planting program ‘One student one tree program’ to encourage students to plant trees was organized by the Dean (Agriculture) in association with Dean (Horticulture) for the UG first year students in the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore campus on Monday. 



At the inaugural function of the program, Dr. M. Jawaharlal, Dean (Horticulture), TNAU, welcomed the gathering, and also briefed them about the importance and uses of various native tree species. 

Dr. S. Mahimairaja, Dean (Agriculture) highlighted the importance of trees. Dr. K. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, TNAU emphasized the values of trees and encouraged the gathering to initiate tree planting by planting a mahizham tree sapling himself.

A total of eight groups of students were formed to carry out the tree planting program at different locations. Mimusops elengi, Thespesia populnea, Azadiracta indica, Sweitenia mahogany were a few of the saplings planted by the students. 

This program aims to encourage each student to plant one tree during their first year at college and thereafter to care for the sapling until the completion of their degree program. A total of 1000 tree saplings were planted in various locations in the university premises.
