Coimbatore: A new variety of nodule is found in lemons produced in Coimbatore and Erode which causes the lemon plants and its flowers to dry up faster. Tamil Nadu Agriculture University said that the disease could have spread from seedlings imported from other State.

According to a statement, the TNAU has found new nodules affecting the lemon plants in Coimbatore and Erode. The affected plants get dried up faster and the leaves turn yellow and fall down. Even the lemon fruits which grow in these plants are smaller and they too are getting dried faster. The University said that when these plants were reviewed, several nodules of different sizes were found in its roots. These nodules are caused by female roundworms called Milaytocain Indica which are generally found in Rajasthan and Gujarat. ‘Balaji’ variety of lemons is widely affected due to these roundworms.

The University asked farmers to bring their soil and produce to the University and test them. Farmers can also call the number 0422-6611264 for further help from the University.
