West Bengal to open agriculture demonstration centre in collaboration with China

West Bengal will soon be the host of an agriculture demonstration centre to be opened in collaboration with China. The centre will showcase methods to grow organic vegetables and how to use machinery to raise efficiency. The centre will get expertise from Shandong province and manpower from Bengal.

Shangdong province has the third highest provincial GDP in China and its agricultural exports amount to one-fourth of China’s total agri exports. Bengal, on the other hand, grows lots of vegetables and has also developed technology at affordable prices. The expertise from China will further boost these aspects.

Fifty-five Indian companies have already confirmed participation in the agro-hub and more companies are showing interest, said an official from the agriculture department.

Over the last six years, the state government has increased agri production, made electricity free for agricultural purposes, promoted the use of machinery for efficiency, convinced farmers into branching into different varieties of food and cash crops. The government has also constructed storage areas called Krishak Bazars all over the state, etc. All these efforts have borne rich fruits, including the state bagging the Central government’s Krishi Karman Award for outstanding agricultural productivity for the fourth year in a row last year.
